Memory Month, Day 8: Learning a Language with The Link

April mentioned in a comment that she had used linking to learn Italian using a product called Linkword Languages. I’ll just say right up front that I am not an affiliate nor have I actually tried the full products. I make no money if you buy their products and am not responsible if they don’t work for you.

That being said, their language tools are a fantastic example of putting linking into practice to learn a new language quickly. You don’t have to actually buy their products to do this, but they have done a lot of the work for you in coming up with great links to help you remember the vocabulary.

I tried the French demo and was impressed. After just one run-through I was able to recall all the words they taught me. Here’s an example of the type of mnemonics they give you:

The French for Hedgehog is HERISSON
Imagine your HAIRY SON looks like a HEDGEHOG

They also pronounce the words for you. I’m actually seriously considering trying this product out to see how quickly I can learn a language. If you watched the video from Day 5, you’ll remember that Daniel Tammet was able to learn Icelandic in a week. Now we’re not all savants, but wouldn’t it be a fun challenge to see how quickly you could master the basics of a new language?
